An approachable model should invite curiosity without pretending the brain is simple. Here is how to interpret Clincol, where our explanations come from, and what remains uncertain.
A network, not a switchboard
Psychological experiences arise from interacting brain and body systems. Regions have multiple roles; attention, memory, emotion, and decisions overlap. A colored region does not prove that a specific thought or emotion is present.
Our four-step scenarios organize an explanation for learning. They are syntheses of research, not experimental findings of a single causal chain. Actual processing is recurrent, distributed, and often simultaneous.
Reading the 3D model
- The blue surface is cortical anatomy. It is the FreeSurfer fsaverage5 average cortical template distributed through Nilearn, with real folds. It is not a scan of you or a complete anatomical atlas.
- Colored points illustrate activity. They represent conceptual activation, not individual measured neurons. Their timing, brightness, and number are visual choices. Playback speed does not correspond to neural firing rates.
- Markers are approximate. They are educational landmarks on one hemisphere, not exact anatomical boundaries. Many functions involve both hemispheres.
- Deep structures are schematic markers. The surface mesh is paired with educational companion forms for the hippocampus, striatum, hypothalamus, amygdala, cerebellum, and brainstem. These companion forms are not segmentations from the visitor’s MRI. “See through” makes their illustrative locations easier to see.
- Zoom changes the teaching layer. Zooming toward any point on the cortex, cerebellum, or brainstem opens the surface into a brain-shaped field of cell bodies, then streams finer samples of neurons around your view. A local circuit shows signals hopping from cell to cell, slowed thousands of times, and single cells resolve into a soma, dendrites, myelin, and an axon. Cells only sit where the meshes contain tissue, but they are a sparse, procedural sample, not a connectome or a count of every cell. Flowing colors mark topics and motion, not natural tissue color or measured activity.
- Painting is a learning gesture. A stroke lights up a nearby landmark in the selected scenario and reveals a related explanation. It does not simulate electrical stimulation, show exact functional boundaries, or demonstrate causation. Colors distinguish topics and are not biologically assigned.
- No measurement or prediction. Clincol does not record brain activity, assess health, or predict how a person will respond to a cue.
Follow the evidence
Each scenario links to source research. A study can offer useful evidence while remaining limited by its sample, methods, task, and setting. Findings from laboratory experiments do not automatically generalize to every everyday situation.
Food noise deserves careful language
